A Murphy bed is a superb choice if you live in an apartment, or a small home with limited space.

However, the question remains, are they as comfortable as other conventional bed options?

The short answer is, Murphy beds can be comfortable. The key lies in choosing the right bed design, mattress, and build quality.

If you take all of these factors into account, will allow you to choose a Murphy bed that is as comfortable as any traditional bed.

Here are some fundamental basics to consider.

Mattress considerations

If you only remember one detail from this article, make sure it’s the importance of the right mattress. A high-quality, compatible mattress is key to a restful night’s sleep.

Size matters

It’s no secret that a larger bed will offer you added room and comfort when sleeping. Murphy beds typically come in twin, queen, and king sizes, and you need to figure out which size works best for you.

Take measurements seriously!

Before hitting the shops, make sure you know the dimension of your Murphy bed frame. You ideally want your mattress to fit snuggly into the frame to avoid shifting or movement when sleeping. A snug fit can also make it easier for you to fold your bed.

Keep in mind that you also need to consider the thickness of the linen you’re planning to use. Linen can add inches to your mattress dimensions and can affect bed frame compatibility.

How will the mattress support you?

Your body weight and shape ought to influence your mattress choices. You’ll want to choose a mattress that’s got the right level of stability and firmness for your body type.

If a mattress affects your posture or you find you are sinking into your mattress, chances are you won’t enjoy a comfortable night’s sleep any time soon.

Murphy beds are popular, given that you can choose the type of mattress you prefer. However, only purchase a mattress thicker than 12 inches (30 centimeters) to prevent difficulties when stowing your Murphy bed away.

If you weigh more than 200 lbs (90 kilograms), try choosing a mattress that is more than 10 inches (25 centimeters) in depth for better support and comfort.

Choose your mattress type carefully

As with any bed mattress, the quality of the mattress and the fibers it is made of will impact how comfortable the matress feels.

Memory or gel foam for a good night’s rest

If you can afford a high-quality mattress, this is the way to go. Lower-quality mattresses can sag over time and are typically less comfortable. Memory foam and gel foam mattresses are by far one of the more comfortable sleep surfaces.

Avoid low-profile mattresses

Where possible, avoid purchasing low-profile mattresses which measure around 5 to 6 inches (13 to 15 centimeters) in depth. Although suitable for tight spaces, they are certainly less comfortable than thicker standard mattresses of 9 to 10 inches (23 to 25 centimeters).

The air mattress alternative

Air mattresses are an alternative to low-profile mattresses. Their firmness can be adjusted to suit your body weight, and the mattresses typically come 8 to 9 inches (20 to 23 centimeters) thick.

A good bed frame design is crucial

Before purchasing your Murphy bed, take time to inspect the frame design. You’ll want to look for a bed frame that’s both sturdy and secure.

A bed frame made from steel or hardwood will be sturdy, supportive, and comfortable. Avoid cheaper low, quality materials.

A poorly constructed bed frame will most certainly affect your sleeping comfort. The frame can cause wobbling and drooping over time. This is why a good Murphy bed will be much more comfortable than something like a sleeper sofa.

Do your research and ask the right questions

Check with your supplier if any independent organization has tested the bed frame for safety and stability and whether it comes with a warranty or guarantee.

It may also be helpful to read online customer reviews before purchasing.  This allows you to consider negative and positive feedback on the bed frame’s durability, comfort, and reliability.

If your supplier offers a bed frame assembly service, this is most certainly worth it, even if at an additional cost. A poorly assembled bed frame is not only a safety concern but can negatively affect the overall comfort of your Murphy bed.

In addition to this, be aware that after assembly, when unfolded, your Murphy bed should touch the floor and not hover above it. Any space between the floor and the Murphy bed fame will cause the mattress to wobble and move when you lie or change position.

Look for a sturdy unfolding and folding mechanism

Purchasing a bed frame with a poorly designed unfolding and folding mechanism will cause a nightmare (and likely make noises, move, or sag when the bed is in use). This is NOT conducive to a comfortable night’s sleep.

If you’re thinking of buying a Murphy bed, seriously consider visiting the store and physically testing out the options that interest you. If the Murphy bed keeps the mattress in place while still supporting your body weight, you’ve found a winner.
